CHAMPS: a brief Overview

CHAMPS is an educational outreach program which informs American youth about the landmine issue and fosters global citizenship. MLI provides participating schools with a teaching tool kit and ideas for integrating the humanitarian cause into the curriculum.

MLI representatives, a dog from a mine-affected country, and a handler visit participating schools to present the opportunity for the community to sponsor and name a lifesaving dog. Included in the live presentation is an exciting mine detection dog demonstration!

Youth organizations (such as Scout troops), schools, cities, and states have all sponsored livesaving dogs. After raising the funds necessary to "adopt" the dog, the CHAMPS participants name their dog and track its progress with pictures and stories provided by MLI.

One extraordinary young CHAMPS participant per year is selected to receive the Joan Wismer CHAMPS Award. The recipient will travel to MLI's Clearing the Path Gala in Washington, D.C. to be honored by the mine action community at large!
